Not Today

December 25th

I love Adrian’s bedroom because of the large windows overlooking the vast forest and the way the sun kisses my face as it rises over the valley. I love the granite fireplace adjacent to the bed, the round, rustic looking chandelier hanging from the ceiling, and the smell of rich mahogany and spice. His king-sized bed is dressed in black and red plaid sheets and a soft gray comforter that I could cuddle under all day long. I would love to stay here forever, naked in his bed, wrapped in his arms and bathed in his scent. But I can’t. I have work to do. Even though I didn’t want to, I dragged myself out of bed and with the comforter around me, I made my way over to the window to take one last glance of the peaceful valley before getting ready for the day. It must have snowed overnight because everything was covered with fresh snow, making it look like a little winter wonderland.

I felt and smelled Adrian behind me before he wrapped his arms around me and kissed the top of my head.

“Morning, beautiful,” he whispered.

I relaxed into his embrace and took a deep breath in. “Morning, handsome.”

For a few moments, neither of us said anything but instead watched the forest come alive as the sun’s rays bathed the trees in golden ribbons of light.

“I have to go,” I said softly.

He made a noise in his throat and then turned me around to meet his gaze. “Oh, no you don’t,” he said. “It’s Christmas, you are not working today, and you are not making Celeste work today.”

“But—”

“Nope,” he interrupted. “We’ve both been dealing with a lot this month, and we will deal with plenty more before the month is over, today we are going to just enjoy the day.”

“But I—” I tried again.

“Oh, no, no, no.” He kissed my lips. “We will enjoy a monster-free, stress-free day and night and then tomorrow it’s back to business. But for right now, I need you to take that perfect ass of yours in the shower and get ready.”

I didn’t want to argue with him. He was right. This month was hectic and crazy busy and maybe we needed some fun, but I had so much work to do.

“Jade, if you don’t get in that shower in the next two seconds, I’m going to throw you over my shoulder and take you there myself,” he said.

That made me laugh.

“That’s it,” he growled and picked me and put me over his shoulder.

I laughed all the way to the shower where he put me down and turned on the water. I shrieked when the first droplets of ice-cold water hit me, and then I grabbed on to Adrian pulling him in with me.

“You’re in trouble, Kincaid,” I said.

He took my face in his hands and pressed his lips to mine. “Punish me then,” he whispered into my mouth.

The water was steaming now. It was cascading down our bodies, and we molded together, deepening our kisses and coming alive under each other’s touch.
